BBC News reported recently that the Canadian province of Ontario decided to quash the attempt to allow Sharia tribunals to decide matters of family law in that province. Read the article here. A significant reason for the rejection of the idea was concern over the rights of women. This is certainly a significant concern and it was for that reason that I recommended that no such tribunal be given ultimate authority but that all decisions be reviewable by Crown Courts.
