You may have seen the video of “sticker guy,” the freshman from Drake University who grabbed the attention of viewers of Hillary Clinton’s Iowa caucuses victory speech.
Perhaps I’m just morose, but this strikes me as a parable of America. Our national consciousness seems to be intent on finding things to distract us from important issues and conversations. We seem to come close to thinking about starting a difficult conversation only to find that some sophomoric person jumps up and makes us laugh and we forget ourselves.
Maybe this is the natural outcome of consumer capitalism or the entertainment age. I dont know. What I do know is that it’s impoverishing us all.
